Wheaton Club Dinner (p365; 3.12.11)

Tonight I went to the Wheaton Club of Western Washington's dinner. I have mixed feelings: I never really feel at home at Evangelical events, but Wheaton was home for three years.

First, the funny story. Twice tonight I was asked if I just graduated. Maybe because I'm around 18 year-olds at work (at least when I walk around on campus), so I usually just feel...old. When I was asked this, I wanted to say: "Not unless this is Portlandia and it is still 1994".

Now, why I feel conflicted: Wheaton, by and large, is/remains a conservative, evangelical, fundamental place. I'm sure there are folks who are more free-thinking, but I just don't get the vibe that I'm truly accepted. When I introduced myself to the new president, it felt stiff. He was really friendly to the men who were around, but I barely got a nod. It could be because I'm youngish, female, and teach at a Jesuit/Catholic school--all traits I embrace LOUD&PROUD. Or, he could have been tired after talk, question and answer session, and travel. But, after being at SPU (and, more importantly, OUT of it), I know that there isn't always a place at the table for feminist, social justice-loving others. And, I'm OK with that. I'm glad to live in a country where there an be all different types of religions, but it hurts when you realize that those can be exclusive groups--even if they think they are accepting of others while you are, clearly, on the outside.

Well, I have a lot more thoughts, but I keep it at these paragraphs--and the picture (worth a thousand words, of course). To sum up: To sons brave and daughters true (motto)...Go Thunder (mascot)! Go with Peace to love and serve the Lord (liturgy from non-Evangelical tradition).
